Mossoppu / Dal

Everyone like Dal, because it’s comfort food and healthy. How about making it more healthy !! By adding so much of green into it ?

So today on my menu i have decided to prepare mossoppu means a dal that include so much of green leaves, it’s an completely Karnataka style Dal, with simple spices yet great in taste.

Mossoppu is an great combination for finger millet balls aka ragi mudde or hot steam rice with a touch of ghee.


  1. Toor dal 1 cup
  2. Palak (spinach)chopped 1 and half cup
  3. Methi leaves 1 cup chopped
  4. Dil leaves half cup chopped
  5. Turmeric powder 1tsp
  6. Tamrind little bit
  7. Curry leaves few
  8. Grated coconut 2tsp
  9. One tomato chopped
  10. One medium size onion chopped
  11. Garlic pod 5 to 6
  12. 5 to 6 green chillies
  13. One tsp of oil

Ingredients for seasoning

  1. 2 tsp of oil
  2. Cumin seeds 1tsp
  3. Pinch of hing
  4. Red dried chilli 2
  5. Curry leaves few
  6. Mustered seeds 1tsp
  7. Garlic pods crushed 3 to 4
  8. Small size onion chopped
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Hing pinch
  11. Cumin powder 1tsp


Soak dal for 30min so that it can cook soon, pressure cook the dal with Turmeric powder and 1tsp of oil, for 3 whistles.

Once the pressure cooker cool down, open the lid and smash the dal with spatula, now all the ingredients that mentioned above with add 1 and half cup water and again pressure cook with 2 more whistles.

When pressure cooker cool down open the lid and mix all the things very well and smash again with hand smasher or spatula.

Now for seasoning, in another pan or in another kadai add oil once it’s heated add cumin seeds, mustered seeds, hing, red dried chillies and curry leaves fry for 50sec, then add chopped onion , crushed garlic pod and salt when onion turns little colour add cooked dal and mix very well, add the water according to your consistency, but make sure that not to add to much of water.

Serve hot with ragi mudde or hot rice.
